Shop Direct Acquires Woolworths BrandLike the proverbial phoenix, Woolworths appears to have risen from the ashes, after a deal with Shop Direct (Littlewoods, etc) to relaunch the stricken chain online. Only a few weeks after the doors closed on the final Woolworths store, Shop Direct, owned by Sir David and Frederick Barclay, has paid an undisclosed amount for the Woolworths brand name.
"Woolworths" will now launch as an online store in the summer, and will be operated alongside the many other Shop Direct brands, which include Kays, Marshall Ward, Littlewoods, Empire Stores, and Choice - to name but a few.
The Shop Direct Group has also bought Ladybird, the popular childrenswear brand that was part of Woolworths, although some other UK retailers, including Mothercare, had reportedly been eyeing the Woolworths brand.
